Hephaestus creates her from clay, shaping her perfectly. Zeus commissions Hephaestus, god of fire and patron of craftsmen, to fashion a woman, upon whom the gods bestowed their choicest gifts. This angers Zeus, king of the gods, who devises a plan to punish Prometheus for having stolen divine fire. Prometheus steals fire from the heavens and bestows it as a benefit to mankind. Her story is recounted in Hesiod’s Theogony. In Greek mythology, Pandora was the first woman on earth, her name meaning “One Who Bears All-Gifts”. Maybe, Pandora’s tale as it is told and retold, carries tell tale clues that can lead us to find hope even in the bleakest times.

Blooming from early to midsummer, and potentially later in the season, this diploid Daylily is evergreen. Each flower typically lasts no more than 24 hours (thus the common name 'Daylily'), opening up in the morning and withering during the forthcoming night, possibly replaced by another one on the same scape (flower stalk) the next day. Its broad ruffled petals do not fade in the sun. wide (10 cm), cream flowers with a contrasting cranberry-purple eye and emerald green throat. Highly fragrant and vigorous, Hemerocallis 'Pandora's Box' is a lovely early midseason Daylily which produces an abundance of large, 4 in.
